Herts Domestic Abuse Helpline

Vital support for anyone affected by domestic abuse

Herts Domestic Abuse Helpline (HDAH) is a confidential and free support and signposting service for anyone affected by domestic abuse. Based in Hertfordshire, the charity signposts callers to local and national agencies that cover a wide range of domestic abuse related issues. HDAH provides a safe space where callers are listened to and can explore their options. They support over 2,000 people every year by phone and email.

Initially, we worked with HDAH to create a more consistent brand image that could be used across all their communications. We introduced the use of engaging imagery to get the attention of potential service users and provide a call to action for supporters and fundraisers. This was combined with the strong use of ‘HDAH purple’ to tie together all the charity’s communication channels and make them instantly recognisable.

Our overhaul of HDAH’s corporate communications generated the impact that the charity needed to stand out. We applied a consistent brand across stationery, leaflets, advertising, flyers, display banners and merchandise to promote the vital service HDAH provides and to encourage volunteers to get involved with the charity.

Over the past 4 years, we’ve worked on several successful campaigns aimed at raising awareness of domestic abuse. Whilst much of our work has targeted females and the elderly, there has been a growing need to raise awareness in the LGBTQ+ community – to support this we helped create HDAH’s ‘Domestic abuse doesn’t discriminate’ campaign with its distinctive ‘rainbow eye’. Based on the statistic that one in six men will experience some form of domestic abuse in their lifetime, we also created the eye-catching ‘1 in 6’ campaign focusing on male victim-survivors – the campaign has now become a familiar brand mark.

Happy client

“We have been working with Blackbird since 2016. They have taken the time to understand the aims, mission and values of Hertfordshire Domestic Abuse Helpline, and have created appropriate messages and images that have helped us become well known across the county. In particular, we have appreciated Nick’s advice on branding consistency and his innovative thinking when we have run out of ideas ourselves!”
