New River Brewery

Overflowing with appeal

Frustrated by the lack of quality pub beer near their homes and forever talking about wanting to be brewers instead of working in finance, friends John and Jeremy took the plunge and established New River Brewery in the Spring of 2015. The brewery is situated near the banks of the New River in Hoddesdon, the 400-year-old aqueduct that brings fresh drinking water from the Hertfordshire countryside into central London. We were delighted to be asked to brand this exciting new business. 

Taking inspiration from the New River, we created a graphic language based around the features, wildlife and activities found along its route. We used the landmark New Gauge House near Ware as the centrepiece for the brewery’s logo (the shape of which we took from the distinctive metal name plates found on the river’s bridges) and illustrated a ‘brand wheel’ to tell the story of the river’s journey from its source into London. Supported by the tagline ‘Craft Beer From The Riverbank’, we applied the elements to pump clips, keg badges and bottles, sales literature, branded trade items and staff apparel. We also designed and art directed the build of the brewery’s website and undertook the location photography. 

With its original style and stand out, our work fits perfectly with the brewery’s ethos. We’re delighted that it has helped generate a steady flow of interest, new sales and listings, as well as collaborations with other local producers and beer festival organisers. 

The work was shortlisted as a finalist in the 2016 SIBA brewery industry awards in the ‘Best Design’ category.
